Days 6 to 12

I haven't been trading much since the last update, with christmas just a few days away i did have to put trading on hold for a bit, but i've still managed to make just enough to finish the challenge.

Like i said at the beginning of the challenge the profit wasn't the real target for me, i guess i haven't traded enough lately to really say i stopped making those stupid mistakes, i still made one big mistake as i've said in one of the earlier posts but since then i have been trading much more on the safe side, no real big profits or losses, still the green/red ratio as been good enough for me.

I'll probably update again at the end of the month if i get to trade that is.

Until then, Merry Christmas!!!

Day 6 to 12: 86,92€
Total: 239,81€

Day 5

Slow day today with not many races to trade so i also traded in the IRL races, still trading 100% pre live.

Day 5: 24,67€
Total: 152,89€

Day 4

Had a good day today, could have been better in terms of profit but today i traded pretty much on the safe side and i confess that this is probably how i should always trade, by trading this way i get a lower average p/race but at the same time i do get less reds and don't get caught in bad positions so often, i think i traded pretty well throughout all day, as i said yesterday i didn't trade in live at all and i was pretty focused all day, so if i'm looking for a day to serve as example today was probably it.

Day 4: 64,76€
Total: 128,22€

Day 3

Terrible day today... I'm very disappointed with myself.

Today i think i found one of the reasons i'm making those stupid mistakes i've been making lately, i was trading just fine throughout the day when by the middle of the day i just find myself frozen after taken a big loss trading in live... Yeah i had a 52€ red that costed me pretty much the whole profit of the day... The good thing is i think i identified one of the reasons for so many mistakes lately.

Previously to November i was working, so my time for trading was a bit limited, but since the beggining of November i'm full time trading, by full time trading i mean trading pretty much all available UK races of the day and sometimes the IRL races aswell...
What i'm trying to say is that i'm extremly bored throughout the day, so i find myself in some awkward situations like trading in live just to get a little excitment(well isn't that smart), more than a year ago i used to trade almost exclusively in live for a few months, i even had much bigger profits than i have now, the thing is i couldn't accept well the higher variance in daily profits i had, and the fact that i sometimes didn't deal very well with some bigger reds, that were some of the main reasons i started to learn to trade pre live, so nowadays when i trade in live i'm a little(a lot) rusty, and find myself not doing very well, so why do i do it then? I don't know... I guess i shouldn't be doing it but there's always one or two races p/day where i feel the urge to trade in live, and ocassionally things don't go well and i end up turning an ok green day into a red day in a matter of seconds.... This is definetly something i will have in mind from now on and try to work on. I will probably try to keep away from going live with exception to long races with hurdles i might still do occasionally.

The rest of the day went ok, could have had a nice day today but that big loss ruined it, still managed to end up with a small green but i'm not happy at all.
Going to be aware of this tomorrow and try to get back on track.

Day 3: 1,84€
Overall: 63,46€

quinta-feira, 12 de dezembro de 2013

Day 2

Very nice and steady day, in terms of profit it was very good, although i did a bunch of small mistakes, started losing concentration after a few hours which caused a few small reds that could have been avoided, but nothing too bad i guess.

Day 2: 53,02€
Overall: 61,62€

quarta-feira, 11 de dezembro de 2013

Day 1

It looks like i've choosen the absolute worst day to start this mini challenge...

For starter i was late to the trading session and couldn't trade the first races of the day, then with 2 tracks closed due to weather and API giving signs of crashing at anytime i didn't get to do much, ended up trading in the IRL races late afternoon but the liquidity was just awfull for me...

Well at least the stupid mistakes count is still at zero.
Hoping for tomorrow to be a better day.

Stupid Mistakes and a new small challenge

NEW CHALLENGE
DEADLINE - 31/12/2013
PROFIT - 200€
MAIN GOAL - No more stupid mistakes

Well... Not really...

I've been doing a lot of stupid mistakes recently, i came to realise that after a few days/weeks of nice steady results i tend to lay back a bit and i imediatly get punished, well i don't even think getting punished is bad, it is indeed very good so i can get punched right in the face and get back to my normal levels of trading, what i do think it's bad it's what i have been doing lately, i have found myself chasing a few bigger reds every now and then, not being aware of races going live, etc, and as i know very well this can and will go extremly bad someday...

So this is the main reason for this new post, i'm going to make a small challenge until the end of the month, but this challenge will be a little bit different for me from the regular challenges we can find pretty much everywhere, what i mean is that regular challenges normally have an amount of profit to reach in a certain amount of time or something along those lines, well the goal of my challenge will be a bit different, although i'm setting an amount to reach aswell, but the main goal will be about reducing/eliminating the number of avoidable errors.

What do i count as avoidable errors?

Well definetly not reds, having reds per say is not a mistake, when trading we gonna have both greens and reds, of course some of them might be considered mistakes for some reason but in genereal i'm not going to consider a red a mistake unless i really consider i've made a mistake in trading.

So, what are those errors then?
Leaving stakes open to close in running intentionally.
Leaving stakes open to close in running unintentionally(like not noticing a race going in running).
Increasing stakes chasing reds.
Trading in running chasing reds.
Not taking small reds.
Trading in tilt mode for any reason related to trading or not.
A lot others that i might not remember now but i will post if they eventually happen.

I'm not really concerned if i will reach the 200€ or not, but i will definetly not be happy if i keep making stupid mistakes on a regular basis.

My bank will be around 200€, i'm going to trade mostly pre race, i'll try to update daily.
If this challenge goes well i will probably start a new and bit bigger one in January.

Wish me luck.

October 2013

Hi, it's been a while since i updated the blog so here's an update:

First of all, the last week of September, i took that week to try a lot of different new strategies i've came across all around the web, from blogs, plain strategies, dutching, laying the field, to "miraculous systems" that never fail, and so on, i also traded live and tried a few strategies of my own, despite a few of them i still want to give it another go but with some modifications, the overall result was pretty bad, nothing i wasn't expecting already but at least now i can be 100% sure those won't work in the long run, despite my small sample it was more than enough for me.
All these fun and games ended up costing me 279.39€, a good part of it being from in play trading.
Hope this scare anyone reading it from doing similar things.

With this black testing week behind the back i did wanted to go back to regular trading in October, but i felt i needed to punish myself somehow for just throwing money out the window, it would have been so much easier just to make a deposit(for those who don't follow the blog, i keep my bank divided between betfair and paypal) returning my bank to normal size but i did found a good punishment for me, not depositing and building my bank up again, when i first thought of this i remember thinking that i didn't wanted to go through it again and was about to reject the idea and just go ahead with the deposit, but after a bit more deliberation i came to the conclusion that if i didn't wanted to do it, that's exactly why i should do it... It's called a punishment for some reason right?

So i did started the month with a starting bank of exactly 7,88€

Things went reasonably well from the start, i did however started with 3/4€ stakes and then raised to 5€ when my bank grew a bit more, i still traded pretty much in the same way i traded the previous month, almost exclusively back/lay in the underdogs.

I was a bit bored the first few days but that was soon gone when the stakes and bank sizes came back to what i'm used to trade with.

All in all i did had a very good month, not free from mistakes of course, but i did had the feeling i was a bit more experienced and traded reasonably well, it will be hard to improve my results for next month but i will definetly try.(without forcing profits)

I also got to trade in person with a trader friend a few days, he didn't had much experience before, and it was mostly from football punting, i'm happy to see that despite he's still taking his first baby steps in the horse racing markets, he's now showing some signs of consistency in his results with small 2€ stakes, and consistency is what we all want right? The profit comes later....

So for November i'm planing on just trading normally without any kind of experiences or tests, since my work contract ended at the end of October and i will actually need the money from trading to help paying the bills, so there's no room for these kind of experiences in the next few months.

I will try to update the blog regularly from now on but i can't promise anything since when i'm about to post a new message i realise i don't have much to say other than show prints with the results...

See you soon.

Update - 1 Month

Exactly a month has passed since the beggining of my challenge, although the challenge has been completed in the first week i continued trading the underdogs the same way (with a few experiences on the favorites along the way) throughout the last month.

I kept a daily 150€ bank and withdrawn profit every single day i traded to maintain the discipline and to keep me away from going to live, i do consider this an important part of success for me, keeping just the amount i need and use for trading in betfair and withdraw profits on a regular basis, although this doesn't allow my trading bank to grow at the moment, but on the positive side it does makes me feel much safer and pleased to see profits getting withdrawn regularly, at this moment i do have 150€ in betfair and keep another 150€ in paypal in case i need it by some reason.

I do intend to raise my bank at some point and i do want to learn to trade the favorites, the few experiences i've made went surprisingly well, still i didn't felt too comfortable with it so i will need a lot more practice with small stakes and if i do feel i can do well i will then start to slowly increase my bank and stakes, but this won't happen too soon as i think i will continue trading the underdogs for at least 2/3 more months.

Considering 30 days ago i started a challenge with 10€, i have to say i'm happy of how things worked out, i did made a lot of mistakes along the way for sure, from letting a stake to close in live, to not noticing a race was about to start and get caught in play with more than 2 stakes, to trading a few races when my internet connection was showing signs of going out at any second, although these and a lot more stupid errors i made weren't exactly new to me, i still made them... On the positive side i didn't chase reds after these mistakes which is to me another very important part for success.

Challenge Complete - Well that escalated quickly

CHALLENGE COMPLETE

Honestly didn't think i was going to complete the challenge so soon, mainly because i wasn't really counting on trading all last 7 days, but i'm glad i did it now. This last day went reasonably well, my only red was due to internet going down for a few minutes, when it came back the odd had gone against me a lot of ticks which costed me the biggest red of all challenge, but no big deal, we just need to keep it cool when this things happen and don't let it get to our heads, just continue trading the same way and the red will pretty soon be more than recovered.

I didn't want to set a deadline for the challenge in order not to chase some averages or eventually reds but i got to admit i had set in my own mind to end it until the end of October, so i have to say i'm pretty happy to end it in 7 days.

So what now?

I'm not sure but i'm probably starting a new and little bigger challenge soon, it is not the same thing going from 10 to 150 as it is going from 150 to 1000, the main reason being that i cannot raise my stakes much more in the underdogs, i did trade favorites for about a month or so but i can't really say i know what i'm doing so i don't think i will start a challenge doing something that i don't really have much experience, but i do intend to learn how to trade the favorites much better, but that will probably won't be happening that soon.

So i'm probably going to be doing the same thing i've been doing so far, i might trade a bit more in live probably.

Well this concludes this challenge, hope it was enough to motivate anybody who has a hard time starting with small banks, but i hope this was enough to show that it is possible to build our own bank from scratch if you believe in yourself and keep improving your trading.

Challenge - 28/08/2013

Hi,

Another great today, which lead me pretty close to completing the challenge, if the average keeps up i will probably complete the challenge in 1,maybe 2 trading days, with that said it's time to be extra cautious since i would definitly not be the first one screwing up with the finish line so close.

Awesome day, 100% green once again which i confess it's a bit strange, don't get me wrong i'm not complaining but my green/red % as been very good, best i have ever had for sure, hope it continues for a day or two more. :)

Challenge - 27/08/2013

Hi,

Another pretty reasonable day today, although i did get two somewhat "big" reds today, for no particular reason, the market just went fast against me and i wasn't really fully focused throughout the entire day so i was just too slow to react/close, but it was no big deal.

Another good step ahead in the challenge, stayed a few cents down from reaching level 10 but there's no real rush.

Challenge - 26/08/2013

Hi guys,

Had a great day today, 100% green which is always good.

I wasn't even supposed to trade today with my daughter kindergarten closed for holidays i didn't think i was gonna have the time and patience to baby-trading-sitting, but she behaved and i did jumped into trading.

Started the day with 4€ stakes and ended with 5€ stakes which is the highest stake i will probably use for a long time, keep in mind that i use multiple stakes at the same time...

As i said day went reaaly great, i more than doubled my bank, and also made a video for the last 3 races.
The video isn't great, i had previously noticed then when i'm recording my trades i usually do some mistakes that i don't normally do, like being too passive in the market for example, so this time i tried not to fall into this and i ended up going too much agressive... Geez... Well i'm normally passive in the markets with this tecnique because i feel that i can make a few ticks p/ race if i play on the safe side, but in the video i wasn't exactly passive but i won't say i was too much agressive either, it's just i think if i wasn't recording i would have done some scratches and cut a few small reds much faster, and opened more trades, but there's really no way to tell for sure i guess... Video is still uploading, will post it tomorrow, or edit this post later.

Edit: Here it is.

Just jumped from level 2 to level 7 in the challenge which is pretty good if you ask me, 8 more levels to go...

Current Bank: 71,58€ - Level 7

Challenge - 25/08/2013

The day was going ok today despite the low number of races until i reached one of the last races, i usually only enter the market in the last 3 minutes +/-, but i usually like to leave the ocasional early specalutive stakes very distant from the actual odd at that moment, so today i did it in one of these last races and proceed to went to the wc, after that i stayed chatting with my girlfriend for a few minutes, when i remembered the race was about to start it was too late, the market had already went up against me and i was 5 or 6 ticks in red, with 3 stakes.... Well wasn't that stupid... Got a big red that costed me around half the profit i had for the day... 3,84€

Other than that session went ok, still managed to end the day with 5,25€.

Almost reaching lvl 3 from the challenge. :)

Current Bank: 28,39€ - Lvl 2

Challenge - 24/08/2013

Traded a bit more today, although i could have traded a lot more but i skipped a few races every now and then, session went reasonably well, had only 2 reds in 21 markets. Raised my bank a little bit more.

Challenge - 23/08/2013

Could only trade a few races today, not really much to say, i just feel a bit rusty for not trading much lately... Still had a pretty good start since it was a 100% green day.

I'm not going to overextend my posts mainly because i'll probably get bored quickly by doing so, if anyone wants to ask anything in particular go ahead and leave a comment.

Build my Own Bank? Challenge Accepted

Hi there,

I'm not exactly getting back to trading because i haven't actually left, as some of you who might actually read my previous posts know i just had very little to no time to trade since mid june, although i still traded every now and then, but just a few races every few days, not even enough to warm up... I will have a bit more spare time in September and October so i'm going to try to trade and post a bit more this next few months.

So the actual reason i'm resuming the blog is that i have been talking to a few friends in the last couple of days/weeks about horse trading (other sports aswell) and or small banks and how hard it is to get started with such a small bank.

Well i'm not even sure how many times i've done this(starting with a small bank) before but i'm pretty sure they were at least 3 times and in all of them i did get to raise my bank a fair amount without the need to invest more money from my own pocket wich is always good if you ask me (despite the lack of motivation to trade with such a small bank), so i think i do have a little bit experience on slowly and steadily growing small banks. This doesn't mean in any way that it is easy or that i can do it everytime but i would like to think that i do have a reasonable probability of being sucessfull.

I normally don't like challenges as i think it might lead to some unwanted self forced mistakes trying to chase those few extra ticks, but this time i'm going to go ahead and set up a small and achievable goal to try and motivate myself and some "small bank traders" who might follow the blog from now on...

Be aware that i'm still working and also have my daughter to take care, so i'm probably only trading 2 or 3 days a week, just for a few hours, this will depend on many things but just to let you know that it won't be a full time thing...

I'm going to be doing what i used to do when i started the blog a few months ago, scalping the underdogs in pre live, back/lay, using 2€/3€ stakes, might do a bit of live if i spot any good opportunities, so here's how it's going to be:

Starting Bank: 10€ (10,72€ to be precise)
Objective:150€

Lvl 1 - 15€
Lvl 2 - 20€
Lvl 3 - 30€
Lvl 4 - 40€
Lvl 5 - 50€
Lvl 6 - 60€
Lvl 7 - 70€
Lvl 8 - 80€
Lvl 9 - 90€
Lvl 10 - 100€
Lvl 11 - 110€
Lvl 12 - 120€
Lvl 13 - 130€
Lvl 14 - 140€
Lvl 15 - 150€

I'm not defining a deadline to achieve this, firstly because as i said i don't think i will have as much time to trade as i would like to, and also not to induce myself in any sort of time pressure to achieve some goals/averages or whatever... Well i guess that's all for now.

Quick Update

Hey guys,

Just a quick update to say sadly i won't be able to trade for a week or two due to work, i'm hoping to get back soon if my schedule doesn't get changed again. It's a little unfortunate since i was doing ok and was hoping to keep the momentum... Well i guess i could still do the US races or the greyhounds but i have close to zero experience on them so it would be me more likely that i would just lose some money until i got a grasp of the markets, but that's not really what i'm looking for.

I might be able to trade a few races some days but can't really be sure for now.

See you soon.

11/06/2013

Another great day, the best so far.

I'm now trading as much in live as in pre-live that's why i'm having such a good evolution these last couple of days, but it won't continue like this for long since there's a limit to where i can raise my stakes in the underdogs.

I did feel i trade well today since i don't even remember any big mistake, i mean, i'm sure i did many mistakes, but the fact that i don't even remember one probably tells me they were only small and normal mistakes, nothing worth mentioning. Only had a small loss (-0,51€) today which was great, if it only were like this every day... I did have a nice trade in live in one race that gave me the best green of the day (4,86€), this usually happens almost every day i'm sure, i do sometimes notice this situations and try to take advantage of it if the market allows it, just need to be sure i'm not on the wrong side of this, if you're wondering what it is let me just say i love when jockeys have very similar clothes...

10/06/2013

Today was a very good day for me, only had one red and it was a very stupid sort of double mistake, first i didn't notice i was trading in an IRL race, so i forgot to lower the stakes since the liquidity is lower in this races, when i noticed my mistakes i was down almost 1€, and then still in the same race it wasn't exactly a mistake but the stream was with a few seconds delay, the horses were still loading in the stream and suddenly the race went live leaving me with a couple stakes open, managed to exit with -1,96€, it wasn't too bad considering the situation but i need to be aware of this so it won't happen again, i actually almost always refresh the stream a few seconds before the off to try and cut the delay to a minimum but i guess i can't do nothing about it when the delay is this big, well on the positive side it was the only red of the day so i can't really complain.

Today i did trade a lot more in live taking advantage that my bank although still small, now allows me to trade live since i don't have to stick to just back/lay anymore, i think half of my profit from today was made in live.

All in all it was a very good day.

09/06/2013

Slow day today, not many races to trade.

Continued with the same approach, scalping the underdogs, got caught in one race where i had the biggest red of the day, it was one delayed race where someone kept pushing the market up, i pretty much saw it coming, just was too slow and hesitant to take a loss, when i finally did try to close it, still jumped up again, ended up a bit frustrated with myself, could and should have closed it earlier, costed me (-3,28€).

08/06/2013

Today was a good day, only had 3 small reds.

Not much to say, i traded with 2€/3€ stakes again, i was caught a couple of times on a somewhat big drifts, one of them was the biggest red of the day (-0,67€), the other one i remember i was with about (-2€) but i was noticing signs that the market would still come down a few ticks, so i took my chance and still managed to take a small profit, could have easily been wrong and made the red even worst but it went ok for me.

These first days went very good, my bank is growing, it's always good to see our bank getting bigger everyday even if it's just by some small amounts, for now i'm just hoping to continue like these first days, maybe when and if a get a to a bigger bank i might start to try other approaches to the market, but that's still a long way down the road so let's stick to this patience game for now.

07/06/2013

Contrarily to what said yesterday about continuing with 2€ stakes for the next few days, today i've used 2€/3€ stakes depending on the odd i was trading at.

Today not being tired from work as it was my day off i felt i was much more focused and not making as many mistakes as normal, the day was going great, only had 1 small red (0,17€) until by the late afternoon, some trader remembered to overstake the underdogs and push the odds way up as he pleased a few seconds before the off, i got caught twice and then once more when i thought he add already left the markets(or changed strategy), like i said those were 3 big reds (1,56€ / 1,69€ / 1,62€), if it wasn't for these it would have been a great trading day for me, unfortunatly this is part of trading and we have to deal with it, on the positive side i kept my trading the same, didn't lost my focus or chased those reds, something that in my early days of trading i would probably have done...

I had a good start, hoping the rest of the month continues like this.

Well We All Have To Start Somewhere

Well we have to start somewhere am i right?
To anyone who might be reading this and relates himself with this sentence, this thought is for you

I know it is hard to have such a small bank, it seems like it doesn't even worth the effort of being so many hours a day in front of a computer "looking at numbers going up and down"as someone says... Altough this is true i think we do have to start somewhere, in almost any job you might apply in your lifetime you'll probably have to start from the bottom, so try to see it from this perspective, if you want to get to the top you'll have to study, learn (a lot of times through trial and error), and show what you worth.
Unlike real life jobs where even if you are good at what you do, you might still not get promoted, ever... At betfair if you are really good in what you're doing , then you are actually promoting yourself, you don't have to depend on anybody noticing how good you are. So i guess it's up to us to find what motivates us everyday so we can learn from our mistakes and get better for the next days. Find what motivates you, and think of that everytime things are not going well, it works for me.

Ok moving on,

Today i missed the first few races of the day due to work.

Like yesterday it didn't went great, but also didn't went too bad i guess.

The first few races of the day went really well, but after a couple of hours i started making many mistakes, i let one race went in-play and it costed me a somewhat reasonable red considering the bank size, i think that red was the trigger for many of the following mistakes i did, my in-play trading also wasn't very good today, many bad entry points costing me a few small reds. By the end of the day i got back to normal and things started flowing again.

As for the pre live it went ok, although i was caught in a couple of big swings against me because i was too slow to react.

I'm still trading the underdogs with 2€ stakes and will continue for a while, might raise the stakes a little bit if and when my bank grows a little more, but for now i'll have to hold on to the 2€ stakes and try to find the daily motivation and focus needed to trade the best i can.

So it Begins...

First day is now behind the back, can't say i'm satisfied with my trading, can't say the opposite either...

What do i mean?

Well i can't complain about the final result, i ended up much better than i was thinking before the day started, but i did made some common mistakes, 2 races i didn't notice the race was about to start and let a stake went in-play... The first one conveniently(not for me) the odd just sky rocketed in 2 seconds leaving me with a -1,46€, which was the biggest loss of the day... Other then that i also wasn't fully concentraded from time to time, i find it very hard to maintain focus level at maximum throughout the day mostly because i don't find much motivation in earning a few cents p/ race ,but i'm working on it(motivation). I'm also trading while being tired from work, but can't do anything about that.
This probably costed me a few small losses during the day but no big deal...

I traded the underdogs with 2€ stakes, always Back/Lay and i went to live in a few races aswell, although i'm only looking for a small 1/2 ticks profit in live since my bank it's so small at the moment that losing the ocasional stake can make a big difference in the overall bank (20% at the beginning of the day).

Results:

Starting Bank: 10€
05/06/2013: +7,14€  (+ 71,40%)
Markets: 43
Market Average: 0,17€
Greens: 36 (83,72%)
Reds: 7 (16,28%)
Actual Bank: 17,14€

Well that's all for today, let's see how tomorrow goes.

Getting Ready

Bank - 10€

Yes, this is going to be my starting bank.

I haven't set any goals for now, i'm just going to go day by day and see where it goes from here, let's just say i'll be happy if i'm in profit by the end of the month...

With this tiny bank i'm probabbly going to be trading the underdogs and try and grab a few cents p/day... Hope i don't get bored to death cause i know how disencouraging it is to be trading a few hours and only netting a couple cents, or even worst, loosing money...

So with this in mind i'll be looking to self motivate me tomorrow before the trading session, maybe set up a playlist with some motivational songs... Might do the trick...

Wish me luck

Small Introduction

Hello World,

Just a small introduction, i'm VedderPT, a portuguese noob horse trader, i have about 10 months experience but with some interruptions along the way, so it's probably more like 5 months experience, i still consider myself a noob since i still think i have a LOT to learn...

So this blog is going to be my personal diary, for me and whoever wants to follow it, i've decided to create it and expose my results so i can keep trying to learn with (hopefully) visitors advices and also because by exposing my results i feel i will probably won't make as many errors as i sadly tend to from time to time...

I usually trade the underdogs, pre live and live.

At this moment i'm currently working so since i won't be able to be at 100% i'm just going to start with a very small bank and try and go up from there.

Any questions or doubts feel free to ask me.
